South Kamloops encompasses the original core of the city of Kamloops and is one of Kamloops’ oldest, most well-established neighbourhoods. It is located between the Trans Canada Highway (Hwy 1) and the South Thompson River. Sahali and Peterson Creek Nature Park are directly south. Because of its age and location, the south Kamloops neighbourhood includes everything from luxury heritage homes and executive penthouse condos, to income-assisted apartments and pioneer residential homes. The streets are laid out in a classic grid system, except for the area west of 1st Ave, which is steeper and more mature. Most single family homes begin east of 6th ave. In the area to the west up to 1st ave, many heritage houses have been converted to commercial space, interspersed with apartment buildings and multi-family dwelling units.
Residents enjoy the benefits of an urban lifestyle, with amenities at their fingertips or within an easy transit ride, and the ability to walk to work. Riverside Park winds along the south edge of the Thompson/South Thompson River, with an urban multi-use trail extending out into Valleyview and across the Overlander Bridge to the North Shore. To the south, there is easy access to Peterson Creek Nature Park. Royal Inland Hospital, the Sandman Center, Sagebrush Theatre, YMCA and the Provincial Law Courts are also in this neighbourhood. The population density is higher than most other areas in Kamloops, because of the number of apartment buildings near the downtown core.
Families with school aged children will enjoy living here due to the close proximity of multiple elementary schools and the location of Prince Charles Park (with a wading pool and amazing playground).
Newer developments to the west include Hudson’s Bay Pointe ( townhomes), Mission Hill (condos) and Guerin Creek Estates (luxury homes). The newest development is Hudson’s Ridge, across from Guerin Creek Estates and north of TRU.
