Dufferin, Kamloops School Information
The city was initially named Cumcloups by Alexander Ross of the Astoria Fur Company. Cumcloups means ‘meeting of the waters’ to the indigenous. Cumcloups would eventually become Kamloops. The city was a hub for business during the fur trade and gold rush, and the growth was explosive. With the expansion of the railroad, the arrival of settlers and overlanders’, Kamloops greatly benefitted. In 1893, the city was incorporated. North Kamloops became a town in 1961, and later in 1967, it became part of the city. Kamloops has stuck to its traditional roots, as lumbering and cattle-ranching have been the most significant industries in the area. Other primary industries include pulp and wood processing, livestock marketing, food canning and packing, and tourism. Due to the location of the city around the Trans-Canada highway, there are many travellers that stop into the area on their way down to Vancouver or elsewhere.
